Single Family Residence
Contemporary Farmhouse
A planning grid based on the house’s wood post and beam structure organizesorganises the three-building plan. Dividing the relatively modest program into three buildings increases the house’s presence and anchors the complex in its vast landscape. The house is carefully detailed so that its modern forms and materials are as durable as traditional farm structures.
The house is actually a three-building ‘campus’ consisting of main house, guest house and garage.

AIA Chicago Design Award
The design of Trillium Springs adapts modern housing architecture to a traditional housing type, the farmhouse. The multi-building layout recalls farm planning that consolidates building structures to maximizemaximise land use. The extensive use of wood gives the house’s modern forms a relaxed and informal character that is typical of Midwest agrarian architecture.
